The Lord’s garden

The best place to find God is in a garden.
You can dig for Him there.~ George Bernard Shaw

For the LORD shall comfort Zion:
He will comfort all her waste places;
and He will make her wilderness like Eden,
and her desert like the garden of the LORD;
joy and gladness shall be found therein,
thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Isaiah 51 v 3

The desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose,
with sweet perfume, with indescribable beauty
and with slowly unfolding grace.
The challenging times and places
slowly give way to wonder and joy.
Where there was only sadness, difficulty and pain,
there is now a garden of love, beauty and delight.

When I moved into my new home, I was very eager to start
a garden, and so I bought three plants from the garden centre,
and prepared to dig holes to plant them in my back yard.
I was beyond disappointed to discover that 6cm below the top soil,
there was an almost impenetrable layer of rock and clay.
I used a mattock which I had inherited from my  father,
and after over an hour of hacking and digging, I was able to
make three very unsatisfactory holes, and hesitantly planted
my three brave plants.

Through a series of God’s amazing interventions and blessings,
now, ten months later, my garden looks like this.

From vegetable peels and scraps I had buried to enrich the soil,
I have unexpectedly grown water melons, butternut pumpkins, potatoes
and tomatoes.

Even now I am amazed that God has transformed the wasteland
of my back yard into my favourite, most productive garden ever.
Surely this is a parable of how God often works in our lives,
transforming a seemingly hopeless situation into a garden of blessings.

  1. Another beautiful story Helen! In a similar way, our Lord can work on a heart of stone and turn it into a pliable and beautiful creation to give glory to God, even as your garden does!
